GIF or JIF: Peanut Butter Brand Debates on the Pronunciation

February 26, 2020

How do you pronounce it?

For the longest time, many users have debated on how ‘GIF’ is supposed to be pronounced. The two pronunciations included ‘GIF’ with a hard G that sounds similar to gift, or ‘JIF’ similar to the famous peanut butter brand.

Now the makers of Jif weighed in on the debate, saying that the hard G version is the right way of saying it and that the JIF pronunciation belongs to their brand.

This declaration also came with a great marketing campaign that included the Jif peanut butter jar being sold with a different ‘Gif’ spelling on the cover. It even puts a description at Gifs are ‘animated looping images’ – as far as we know, it’s still the same peanut butter product that is inside.

The limited edition jar is now sold out, but you can check out Jif’s partnership with GIPHY, where you can browse different GIFs that settle the #JIFvsGIF debate once and for all.
