You can now use Messenger without a Facebook account

Simply sign up and start chatting!

In a bid to take over the messaging world, Facebook is now allowing its Messenger app to be used even without a Facebook account. This means that you can simply sign up using a phone number, no Facebook account required.

With this move, Messenger will be in direct competition with other messaging services such as Kik, WeChat and even WhatsApp, which Facebook currently owns. All these messaging clients simply need a smartphone number to work.

“With this update, more people can enjoy all the features that are available on Messenger – including photos, videos, group chats, voice and video calling, stickers and more. All you need is a phone number,” Facebook Software Engineer Louis Boval said in a blog post.

The feature is only available in the US, Canada, Peru and Venezuela at the moment, but it should start rolling out in other countries soon.
