Asus ROG Mothership: This is a beast

It can’t get more over-the-top than this.

Asus isn’t shy about giving gamers what they want – no matter how pricey it will be and how crazy the design is. The Asus ROG Mothership is just that: an ambitious gaming device that features an insane design partnered with crazy performance. I couldn’t quite make out the exact design aspect of the Mothership since it’s basically a laptop and a desktop.

From its design you can clearly see that the Mothership is made for gamers – extreme design with pointed sides and a classic ROG logo will definitely make this machine stand out from the rest. It’s designed like a laptop but the Mothership doesn’t open like one – one you pop it open the display (which houses most of the hardware) a kickstand opens at the back that’s strong enough to support the notebook’s structure.

Think of the Mothership as an oversized Microsoft Surface and the subtle and classy design changes to a more extreme setup which gamers will definitely appreciate, LED lights included. The included keyboard is fully detachable and works wirelessly or wired so it’s easy to use it on any scenario. I didn’t realize the keyboard detaches easily so be careful when carrying the entire device since I almost dropped it when taking it out of the box.

Ports are abundant on the Mothership – from USB Type-A to Type-C ports, along with DisplayPort and HDMI 2.0. Inside, you’ll find some insane hardware starting with the 2.4 GHz Intel Core i9-9980HK processor along with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 2080 graphics chip. There’s also 64 GB of DDR4 RAM and three 512 M.2 NVNe disks for the storage. These specs alone instantly make the Mothership one crazy gaming machine.

That also means that the ROG Mothership’s price will be at a premium – 24,999 AED to be exact. It’s not cheap, but if you have the dough, this gaming machine can give you all the framerates you need.

The ROG Mothership comes with a 17.3-inch full HD panel that supports a 144 Hz refresh rate, enough for you to enough fast-paced games without worrying about ghosting or similar artifacts that you usually encounter with normal 60 Hz displays.

As you can expect, performance is top-notch. Every game I’ve loaded from my Steam and Microsoft libraries all played flawlessly on the Mothership, averaging 50-60 fps with ultra settings enabled. Along with that, the superb power of the Mothership also meant that it can handle literally any task we throw it with: editing, rendering, gaming, etc. The Mothership’s display and included 4W speakers are also loud enough to give you your own personal home theater since it can emulate a 7.1 surround sound setting. Typical of most Asus notebooks, the Mothership also includes various software that will let you customize and even overclock some of the internal components.

The ROG Mothership’s three-hour battery life isn’t the best, then again this machine isn’t really made for transport. The crazy components also mean that the ROG Mothership needs two power bricks to power it so says don’t consider this if you’re looking for a portable gaming machine.

Overall, the Asus ROG Mothership has all the makings of what an extreme gaming machine should be, and it certainly delivers on all aspects. The price may be steep, but if you’re planning to buy the Mothership we can assure you that you won’t be disappointed.
