Asus ROG Zephyrus G14: Gaming on the move

May 7, 2020

An incredible gaming laptop.

There’s a lot to like about the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 gaming notebook – not just with the cool-looking design but also with the incredible performance it offers. When AMD officially launched its Ryzen 4000 processors, the ROG Zephyrus G14 was one of the highlighted notebooks, and there’s a clear reason why.

At 6,999 AED, the ROG Zephyrus G14 isn’t cheap – but the hardware that Asus loaded in this notebook with features that makes up for in terms of performance which in turn makes this a very good investment.

First, let us look at the design – the ROG Zephyrus G14 is thin at only 17.9mm and lightweight at just 1.6kg, which isn’t really a defining characteristic of a gaming laptop. But this means that you can easily carry the notebook anywhere and play to your heart’s content no matter where you are.

The back of the display has a more subtle ROG branding that I actually liked, which makes it ideal for use for work or play. Even the new Moonlight White color is beautiful to look at, and this is coming from someone who usually prefers dark colors. Almost every side of the ROG Zephyrus G14 has a cooling vent, which is good when you think of the power that’s packed inside this notebook.

Open it up and you will find a chiclet-style keyboard that’s comfortable to type on. The spaces are wide enough to make it look bigger than the usual, which is a welcome change for built-in keyboards that usually are cramped. There are also dedicated keys placed on top that gives you access to volume controls and even the Armory Crate software.

There’s also a quad-speaker setup that’s powered by Dolby Atmos technology, which is basically a new immersive way of listening to sound. You won’t care at first, but playing games will noticeably be different – this is evident when I was playing Resident Evil 3, where I kept looking at my back every time I heard footsteps.

Asus has also loaded the ROG Zephyrus G14 with a plethora of ports that include two USB Type-A (3.2 Gen 1) and two USB Type-C (3.2 Gen 2) ports along with HDMI and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. There’s a dedicated AC port for charging, but the ROG Zephyrus G14 will also let you charge using the USB-C port. Oddly missing is a webcam, which I realized was missing when I tried using it for video calls.

The 14-inch display offers a WQHD resolution of 2560-by-1440 pixels, which automatically synchronizes with the GPU’s refresh rate to eliminate tearing. This makes gameplay more fluid, putting less strain on the eyes when gaming for long periods.

Powering the ROG Zephyrus G14 is the new AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS processor partnered with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060. There’s also 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. These specifications alone are enough to offer great performance with games. AMD’s 7nm Ryzen 9 4900HS CPU is a beast – easily getting high marks on our tests with a consistent performance even at high workloads.

This is also the world’s lightest GeForce RTX notebook and the GeForce RTX 2060 inside the ROG Zephyrus G14 delivered high frame rates on the games we’ve tested. Metro Exodus, for example, managed to get 110 fps on low settings, and putting it at ultra graphic settings still put it at a very playable 40 fps. For Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, we played around with the notebook’s various modes that include Silent, Performance, and Turbo. We hardly saw any difference with frame rates between Performance and Turbo modes – both getting an average fps of 85.3, which is already a good score. Overall, the ROG Zephyrus G14 flawlessly ran any game we installed on it with no hiccups.

But how is battery life? We’re glad to say that the ROG Zephyrus G14 delivers with flying colors. On a single charge, I managed to get 5 hours of continuous playtime – and this is when the notebook is on high-performance mode. This means that adjusting some of these settings will yield a longer battery life. I used it to binge-watch Community on Netflix, and it ran for more than 9 hours before I had to plug it in. This is clearly one of the best batteries we’ve seen on a notebook.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 brings together the best of what a gaming notebook can offer: great performance, lightweight design, and incredible battery life. There’s plenty to like about the Zephyrus G14, and it stands as one of the best gaming notebooks you can buy today.

Note: The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 will be available for pre-order in the UAE starting today, May 7th, from, Emax, Sharaf DG, and on May 11th from Virgin Megastores.
