Read why we’re in love with Asus’ new notebook.
The VivoBook series from Asus aims to deliver a notebook that offers decent performance and a design that adds a touch of personality. It’s also lightweight and a joy to use, making it one of our favorite notebooks from Asus.
Coming in colors of Gun Metal, Starry Gray – Red Ribbon and Firament Green, it’s clear that the Asus VivoBook S14 (S430F) was made for the younger crowd, but that doesn’t mean adults like me can’t enjoy it too. I love the color scheme and the design of the notebook, different from the usual boring design we see from everyday laptops and less edgy and extreme than we’ve seen on the gaming variants.
Once you open the S430F, you will notice the screen lifting the entire body with it. This feature, called ErgoLift, is a hinge that tilts the keyboard slightly up when you open the screen. This gives the S430F more room for cooling when it’s under heavy load and improves the typing position. I wasn’t convinced when I first read it, but using it every day definitely made a difference.
It’s only 18 mm thin and weighs 1.4 kilograms, making the S430F a perfect everyday notebook. True to this statement, I brought it nearly every single day on the train and not once did I feel it was weighing down my backpack.
There’s a 14-inch, full HD display that will greet you when you open up the S430F – though I would have preferred a higher resolution. But one thing you’ll notice is the slim bezels that surround it. This gives the illusion of having a larger screen and also includes a wide viewing angle.
Asus has packed the S430F with some impressive internals that should be able to deliver optimum performance, especially on everyday usage. Running Windows 10, you’ll an Intel Core i7-8565U CPU with 16GB of RAM plus a 256GB SSD and a 1TB hard drive along with an Nvidia graphics chip. These specifications are technically already high-end, but as we said the S430F is made for the everyday user which should be fast enough for productivity and even multimedia uses.
There are also I/O ports at the side, ranging from USB, USB-C, HDMI, a microSD card slot and a headphone jack. The island-style keyboard is also backlit and is comfortable to type on. Additionally, the touchpad also includes a fingerprint sensor, making it easier to log on to the notebook and adds an extra layer of security.
The S430F also includes a fast-charging feature that Asus says lets you charge from zero to 60 percent in just 49 minutes. We tested this for ourselves and we’re happy to say we got similar results.
The Asus VivoBook S14 (S430F) is a great everyday notebook and I easily fell in love in the weeks I spent with it. It’s fast, lightweight and even looks great, easily making this one of our top recommendations in its category.
+ Great design
+ Fingerprint sensor
– Would have benefitted from a higher-res display
