An inexpensive tracker made for everyone.
Xiaomi’s Mi Smart Band is always a favorite of mine since it offers a decent fitness tracking solution at a price that’s much lower than what competing brands offer. The latest version now comes with the Mi Smart Band 5, which is probably one of the most affordable fitness trackers out there, costing only 169 AED. Let’s check it out.
The Mi Smart Band 5 features mostly the same build as the Mi Band 4, but now comes with a larger 1.1-inch AMOLED display. While the screen size looks small on paper, it is actually still readable when you start using it. Display brightness hits at 450 nits, meaning that it is also bright enough to be used even in direct sunlight.
The brightness setting on the Mi Smart Band 5 isn’t adjustable though, and changing the brightness means you would have to go through the settings menu and manually adjust it there. That being said, I was content with the current brightness setting I had on the Mi Smart Band 5 when I was using it, so I never felt the need to change it.
The Mi Smart Band 5 also comes with more than 65 dynamic displays that you can use and along with that, you’re given a choice of six band colors that you can mix and match according to your preference. The Mi Smart Band 5 now uses a magnetic charger that attaches at the bottom, this made it easier to charge the device compared to how annoying it was to charge the Mi Band 4.
For exercising the Mi Smart Band 5 has 11 exercise modes that include indoor cycling, elliptical, yoga, rowing machine, and jump rope. It also has a 5 ATM water-resistant certification, meaning that you can safely use the device in water or when you jog outside in the rain. The Mi Smart Band 5 also supports blood oxygen tracking, sleep tracking, stress tests, a PAI scoring along with female health tracking. Of course, there’s also heart-rate monitoring that Xiaomi says is now 50 percent accurate. All of this data is recorded through the Mi Fit app that’s available on iOS and Android devices.
Initiating an exercise is easy, a few swipes and taps on the Mi Smart Band 5 and you’re ready for your workout. Since data is synced to your smartphone, you can simply check the Mi Fit app to view your workout stats. It’s pretty much a straightforward fitness tracker without the fancy bells and whistles, and generally for some that should be enough.
The Mi Smart Band 5 also gains some decent smartwatch-like features like notifications and call reminders along with playback controls and a phone finder. While these are mostly basic functions, the camera feature is our new favorite since you can use the Mi Smart Band 5 as a shutter when taking images, which works best when you’re taking your own images.
Xiaomi says that the Mi Smart Band 5 can last up to 2 weeks on a single charge, but that is when you turn off continuous heart rate monitoring. Since I’ve turned mine on, it managed to drain faster than I expected, but I ended up using it for a total of 10 days before I needed to charge it so no complaints there.
Overall, the Mi Smart Band 5 has everything you need from a fitness tracker – it performs well, has all the basic functions, and has incredible battery life. For 169 AED, it’s definitely a steal.
