Probably one of the best 4K Blu-ray players around.
4K Blu-ray is now gaining popularity for home enthusiasts and with companies releasing new and catalog titles in the format, nearly everyone is starting to go 4K. The first wave of 4K Blu-ray players was actually good, but they weren’t really affordable. Fast-forward to today and there are a plethora of player options for you to choose from – and this one from Sony turned out to be one of our favorites.
The Sony UBP-X700 has nearly all the features you can expect from the flagship player: 4K Blu-ray playback, Dolby Atmos/DTS:X support, HDR10, and even Dolby Vision compatibility.
Design-wise, it the UBP-X700 is small, light and compact which should fit easily underneath any TV. Its external build quality is okay, though we expected something better. Still, it’s a small quip on otherwise a fantastic player.
The front side of the only features the power and eject buttons and a small LED light that should give you an idea of the player’s status. There’s no display and personally, I don’t see it as a problem. A USB port is also present, where you can connect and play your media files. On the back side of the player, you’ll find dual HDMI ports, coaxial digital output, and an Ethernet port. Also included is a remote control that houses most of the player’s functions.
The UBP-X700’s menu interface is pretty much straightforward. Icon-based menus take you to different playback options. Streaming services like Netflix and YouTube can be installed on the player, and while other services are also available, geo-restrictions prevent us from installing them.
Once the UBP-X700 starts I was taken to a connectivity menu that let me choose between a wired and wireless connection. Since the player was sitting to my router I opted to go for the wireless option. After a software update that took about 10 minutes, the UBP-X700 is ready to play.
I hooked up the UBP-X700 to my existing home theater setup so I can maximize the Dolby Atmos/DTS:X compatibility. I’ve played more than 50 4K titles on the UBP-X700 and it all handled them perfectly. Loading was super fast and it didn’t have any trouble reading even regular Blu-rays, 3D Blu-rays, DVDs, CDs, and even SACDs.
I watched Blade Runner 2049 on the UBP-X700 and it gave some of the best image quality I’ve seen. To some extent, the picture quality was even better than the default 4K Blu-ray I am using: the Xbox One X. Skin tones are perfect, and HDR upped the colors to a whole new level. It also didn’t have any problems outputting the Dolby Atmos audio straight to my Denon receiver using HDMI. The UBP-X700 is quiet too – on one weekend where I spent the whole day watching movies not once did I hear anything from it.
The UBP-X700’s 1,099 AED price is just an icing on the cake for this 4K Blu-ray player. The feature list is great, performance is awesome and it’s incredibly affordable for a player of this type. If you’re looking to invest in your 4K home theater setup then Sony’s UBP-X700 is very highly recommended.
+ Excellent picture quality
