Tecno Spark 3 Pro Review

This budget smartphone costs less than 500 AED. Let’s see how it performs.

There is now an overflowing amount of smartphone companies offering different devices in various price brackets. The problem is that with different choices, most brands and their devices usually don’t get their time to shine.

Enter Tecno Mobile. We’ve seen the company enter the UAE market in the past years, though consumers didn’t really catch up. After hitting it big in the African region, they’re looking to enter the market again albeit in a smaller and yet more impactful way.

The first of their devices to launch in the region is the Spark 3 Pro, a budget smartphone that is priced at only 449 AED. It’s definitely a steal considering most premium smartphones nowadays start at 3,000 and 4,000 AED. It’s clearly not intended to be a high-end smartphone, but it should be good enough to perform everyday tasks.

The dual SIM Spark 3 Pro features a 6.2-inch display that showcases decent colors. It has the same notch like the iPhone XS, though it only houses the front-facing 8-megapixel camera and its flash. Buttons on the side of the device house the power and volume rocker. There is also a headphone jack at the bottom along with a micro USB port for charging plus a fingerprint sensor at the back. While I understand that it’s a budget device, it would have been better if they opted with a newer USB-C port since similar budget devices already use it.

There is also a dual camera set up at the back that includes a 13-megapixel sensor plus a 2-megapixel sensor. The camera is strictly okay and produces decent shots especially outside in the sunlight. You have to understand its limitations though, so don’t expect a super fine image. The camera also includes a special AI Bright beauty mode that enhances facial features for better-looking selfies and shots.

Performance-wise, you can feel that the quad-core processor and 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage (expandable through micro SD) can run the most basic apps, though it’s clearly evident that it could have used more RAM to handle extra tasks such as opening extra tabs on web pages. Not that it’s bad, but even similarly-priced devices already offer at least 4 GB of RAM.

The Spark 3 Pro features HiOS 4.6 based on Android Pie. You’ll get the usual bells and whistles from Android’s latest version and it’s even compatible with the Android Q Beta that you can install and try out for yourself.

The Spark 3 Pro is available in Midnight Black, Champagne Gold (tested here), Bordeaux Red and Nebula Black. It’s definitely a steal at 449 AED and should be enough for anyone looking for a simple Android smartphone – but personally, I’d look around for other option before choosing this one.

We Love:

+ Affordable price

+ Compatible with Google’s Android Q beta

We Hate:

– Average performance

– Similarly priced competitors offer better specs

Final Rating: 3/5
