TP-Link Archer AX90 Review
February 25, 2021

High-speed Wi-Fi with maximum coverage.

The Lowdown

The TP-Link Archer AX90 brings the best of Wi-Fi 6 that also supports 2.5Gbps wired connections, making it one of the best Wi-Fi 6 routers that you can buy.

The Review:

Wi-Fi 6 is now the newest standard in wireless networks, offering some of the best download speeds that you can experience on any device. But to enjoy Wi-Fi 6, all your devices must support it, including the router you’re connecting it to. TP-Link’s Archer AX90 brings the best possible Wi-Fi 6 speeds of up to 4.8Gbps that covers a huge area thanks to its eight antennas that utilize beamforming technology.

The Archer AX90 is a tri-band router, which supports speeds of 4804Mbps on 5GHz, 1201 Mbps on 5GHz, and 574Mbps on 2.4GHz. The router intelligently utilizes the three bands and allocates devices depending on the speed that is needed. The router also supports TP-Link OneMesh, allowing you to configure additional extenders to set up a mesh network.

It’s powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core processor so it can seamlessly handle different connections and ensure smooth operation even when the network is under heavy load. It also supports WP3 that offers increased security for Wi-Fi encryption.

The Archer AX90 comes in the usual glossy and matte finish. Aside from the non-removable antennas, there is an abundance of ports available: there’s a USB 3.0 port on the left side and at the rear, you’ll find the USB 2.0 port, power switch, reset button, 2.5Gbps WAN/LAN port, a 1Gbps WAN/LAN port and 3 additional Gigabit LAN ports.

Setting up the Archer AX90 easy and hassle-free, you simply need an internet browser to configure your connections. Alternatively, there is also the Tether app available on iOS and Android that also lets you manage the router’s settings. It is worth noting that this router support OFDMA and MU-MIMO technologies that basically allow it to handle multiple and simultaneous connections so it doesn’t slow down the connection even with multiple people are connected. We also liked that you can set up a Guest Network if you want to keep your network separate and private. Other software features include support for Amazon Alexa (though we would have preferred Google Assistant) and HomeShield suite that offers protection against threats on your network.

Performance is great as expected, especially if your device already supports Wi-Fi 6. This allowed us to great throughput readings of up to 900Mbps, considering that it is placed near the router. When testing it from another room, the throughput drops to 650Mbps, which is still great.

The Archer AX90 also didn’t break a sweat when we connected all our devices. At one point, a total of 29 devices were connected, with 4 devices streaming in 4K. The connection didn’t falter during the entire time that I was using it.

Overall, there is a lot to like about the TP-Link Archer AX90: superfast Wi-Fi 6, a faster 2.5Gbps, Mesh compatibility, and a plethora of software features that will keep your network secure.
