TP-Link Deco X90 Review

April 22, 2021

Let’s take a look at TP-Link’s new Wi-Fi 6 router.

The Lowdown:

The TP-Link Deco X90 delivers a great Wi-Fi 6 performance that’s easy to set up and configure despite the expensive price.

The Review:

TP-Links new Deco X90 router brings the best of Wi-Fi 6 connectivity in an AI-driven mesh setup. While the price isn’t for everyone (a 2-pack retails for 2,399 AED), it offers some of the best wireless and wired speeds we’ve seen on a networking device.

I like the design of the Deco X90 and through an app, you should be able to get the router up and running in just minutes. At the back, you will find two LAN ports: a Gigabit port and a 2.5Gbps Multi-Gig port. There’s no USB port, unfortunately, which could be a deal-breaker for some. Inside, there are six internal high-gain antennas and two smart array antennas for a strong and stable Wi-Fi signal.

The Deco X90 brings tri-band support along with quad-stream radios that support 1024-QAM and 160 MHz. These specifications overall can boost the wireless speeds up to a crazy 6,600 Mbps. It also utilizes the combination of OFDMA and MU-MIMO technology that help build a more efficient network that improves network capacity and even cut down latency.

TP-Link says that the router is capable of handling up to 200 devices and while I couldn’t test that in my home setup, I managed to collectively connect around 30 smartphones, tablets and laptops that are all streaming YouTube and not once did I see the connection falter. The signals on the router were enhanced by BSS Coloring and Beamforming that help make it clearer and stronger, resulting in little to no dead spots and wear signals in your home network setup.

These routers also employ AI that utilizes its self-learning capabilities to know more about your network and user behaviour. Through this, it can effectively deliver a stable and lag-free connection that improves over time. For security, the Deco X90 offers up to WP3 encryption as well as an optional subscription to TP-Link HomeShield that can help monitor and protect and connected gadgets and IoT devices.

Performance works as expected, and I managed to get a strong and steady connection inside my one-bedroom flat. Despite the thick walls, the connection was still consistent thanks to the smart antennas that spread the signal to nearly every corner of my home. The Deco X90 also works with Amazon Alexa, allowing you to send voice commands through the smart speaker for easier operation.

The TP-Link Deco X90 deliver a decent performance with a beautiful design. It’s one of the fastest Wi-Fi 6 routers available if its price is not a problem for you.
