Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 Review: A beautiful piece of hardware
March 4, 2019

We had doubts at first, but Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 3 turned out to be one of our favorite Android smartphones.

Xiaomi’s on a roll with its line of smartphones that touch on the premium by design and features but costs less than half of what its competitors offer. The Mi Mix 3 is its latest full-screen device, evident by the bezeless design that made us fall in love with the smartphone in the first place.

While most smartphones that embrace the full-screen display usually uses notches or punch hole displays, Xiaomi did something different with the Mi Mix 3 – a slider. Yes, sliding down the front screen of the smartphone will reveal the dual front-facing camera. The slider might take a little getting used to, and since it’s quite stiff you might have to exert some effort to open it.

The glossy and shiny design also turned heads, which adds more points on how the Mi Mix 3 was designed. It does look cool especially under sunlight, but the glossy exterior also means that it’s a fingerprint magnet. A few minutes of using the Mi Mix 3 out of the box and it’s already covered in smudges. Good thing the package already comes with a matte case, but I would probably have a microfibre cloth nearby because these smudges will just drive me crazy.

There is a fingerprint sensor located behind the device which is still my preferred way of unlocking a smartphone. There are also dual cameras that mimic the iPhone XS’s design, along with a USB Type-C port at the bottom but no headphone jack.

On the front is the gorgeous 6.39-inch Full HD+ display. It’s a 2340-by-1080 pixel AMOLED screen, which is enough to deliver deep blacks, bright whites, and brilliant colors. It may look muted when compared to other AMOLED displays, but overall, I like it especially without the distracting notches or punch holes.

The Mi Mix 3 is powered by a Snapdragon 845 chip with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. It runs on MIUI 10, Xiaomi’s custom skin based on Android 9 Pie. In using the Mi Mix 3 for a couple of weeks, there weren’t any lags or hiccups with its performance and the customized interface is easy on the eyes. Everything was buttery smooth from opening apps to launching games or multitasking between the two.

The Mi Mix 3’s dual 12-megapixel cameras might mimic the specs of the iPhone XS (even the Camera app looked very similar), but this smartphone is still a very capable shooter. When used outside in sunlight, the Mi Mix 3 captures great color and detail on virtually any shot that we did especially when HDR is turned on. There’s also AI support that automatically adjusts settings based on what it sees on screen, though we’re more comfortable using our own settings.

The front-facing cameras also do a decent job of capturing selfies. There are two sensors: 20-megapixel and 2-megapixel, which also allows it to capture Portrait shots for the bokeh effect on your selfie.

The Mi Mix 3’s 3,200 mAh battery was mostly decent in the days I spent with it. I usually set out with a full 100 percent battery and I’d usually have 15-20 percent left by night time.

The Mi Mix 3 packs plenty of features and power that should make it at par with other flagships. The 2,199 AED price isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s less expensive compared to other flagships with similar hardware. Overall, Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 3 is definitely one of our favorite Android devices.

We Love:

+ Incredible build and design

+ Fast hardware

+ Great camera

We Hate:

– Slide out camera needs some getting used to

– Fingerprint magnet

– Not dustproof and waterproof

Final Rating: 4.5/5
